Once you get yourself going on social media, I guarantee it won’t be long until you stumble upon the famous “hashtag” (#).

Today’s social media culture effectively worship this essentially symbol and nowadays it is hard to find anyone who either doesn’t use them or hasn’t a clue what they are.

But what’s so good about them?

Hashtags are the shortcut for you to uncover content worthy of sharing to your own audience, and consequently, a way of other people to discover your content and share it with their followers. It is the only way of reaching out to people beyond your follower base without using paid promotion- and it works wonders!

By using hashtags in your posts, you will be able to categorize your posts so people outside your community who are interested in the content subject can view it and potentially engage with you by liking, sharing or commenting.

When to not use hashtags:

Of course, hashtags are a brilliant invention and can open many doors for businesses; there is one thing that some users will slip-up upon when trying to engage with people through hashtags…

Believe me when I say less is more. Using too many hashtags can make the content you post look sloppy and hard to read and could even essentially push prospects away; people may get distracted from the key message you’re trying to put out or may even simply just scroll past it.

The evidence in the chart speaks for itself- although the tool can assist users in generating engagement and impressions, using too many can be perceived as spam!

So my advice is to utilize the symbol, and watch it grow your networking accounts. But do it strategically and be smart with it or else it’ll do you more harm than good.
