Political, regional and local consultants are appealing for people to become even more aware of the positive aspects of social media attention as opposed to focusing on its weaknesses which frequently prove to be harmful.

Peter Wickham, who is a political consultant, is worried that businesses are not maximising social media in a beneficial way, but instead to offend others over the World Wide Web.

“Here in Barbados, one of the main problems is people have been using social media to invade people’s privacy and it’s not like this hasn’t happened already. The problem is that we haven’t been broadcasting it when we have the social media reach. Any idiot with a cell phone is a broadcaster now, and can do tremendous damage,” Said Peter Wickham on Observer AM.

Also, Wickham referred to the US presidential candidate Donald Trump to reiterate his opinion that once something is posted on the internet, it is unable to be taken back, which definitely will be harmful for those in the political world.

“As we see from the Trump campaign, he’s been responding on anything and everything as he sees fit and it does create potential problems. It’s good in a way because you can see what the person is thinking and feeling in a very spontaneous way. The ability to prepare, rehearse, revise it and to see how it offends and focus … So, two weeks before the election, where everything is scripted, you cannot retract what was previously said.”

Alistair Thomas, a local Teacher/Parent association president agrees with Peter Wickham’s opinions and implied that others must be made aware of how to use social media to good effect.

“I think the question and debate about the impact of social media is an ongoing one because it is an evolutionary tool. My concern is how it’s being used; I think that a part of our curriculum how we look to social media for economic returns. To me, it is used more for gossip and trivial matters as opposed to reaping its greater benefit,” Alistair Thomas said.
